Babko is a traditional bamboo container that serves various utilities in everyday use among the Rabha tribe of Assam and Meghalaya. Cylindrical in shape, the vessel consists of one piece of bamboo that is light and environmentally friendly. The container, intelligently designed by nature, is naturally sealed on its lower side due to the node of the bamboo, thus eliminating the need for an artificial base. On the other hand, the upper side is open and tapers to a point, allowing either precision pouring or securing. A rope is attached to this pointed end, used as a handle or sling for carrying the Babko over the shoulder or securing it to the belt during extended walks or agricultural work.
Babko has been traditionally used for carrying water or homemade brews, reflecting the Rabha community's sustainable way of living and ingeniousness. The simplicity of construction and a functional design make it indispensable in the everyday activities of the tribe. Now housed in the Indian Museum in Kolkata, it showcases indigenous knowledge systems in accord with their natural habitat.
