Bamboo, poker-work combs are one of the traditional accessories of Bhuiya tribe. It has an indigenous history as belonging to mostly the eastern state of India Jharkhand. The comb made of bamboo ages old from the culture of the tribe as well as the utility part of it. The artisans have decorated this comb using poker work, which is treating bamboo with hot iron or metal tools to make intricate designs and motifs on the surface.
The motifs are often portrayed on the comb, inspired by tribal culture, borrowing from nature, wild animals, and their spiritual belief systems. The Bhuiya know such patterns as geometric shapes or spirals formed on their combs, mentored by familiar flora and fauna of their land. Poker work adds beauty to the comb, while texture and depth are other features of the designs. For the Bhuiya people, this comb symbolizes much more than a grooming tool. Retaining a prominent place within the daily attire of the members of this tribe, it expresses a sense of self-identity and status. The art of making these combs, set in elaborate handwork, states the tribe's skill and creativity in working with natural materials. These combs are used not just by the Bhuiyas but also appreciated as artworks beyond Bhuiya cultural tradition.
