description
This bamboo box furnished with a lid is an instrument of traditional utility and storage belonging to the Bhutia tribe of Sikkim. Fine splitting of bamboo crafts such a box, indicative of an exceptional style of craftsmanship in the community while also their deep-rooted connection with eco-friendly materials. The squarish and defining corners give it a strong geometric appearance.
What can be highlighted about the box is that it is brightened by the vibrant green and red siphoning bright colors for aesthetic beauty, probably for much of a deeper symbolism in Bhutia since these two colors actually are synonymous with harmony and celebration. The lid snuggles itself securely above, implying that it is meant to secure its contents, whether foods, herbs, ritual objects, or personal belongings. An entirely different functional artifact, this bamboo -censer makes an object quite worthy of display as well. Quite light, durable, and very breathable, it makes an ideal match for the hypsometric, domestic settings of Sikkim's humidity. Artistic factors actually show that functional items in Bhutia are most often raised to the level of exquisite through the use of color and design.
