The Kota tribe's bamboo basket, which is found in Tamil Nadu, happens to be very ancient and highly important, made using dexterous artisan craftsmanship and cultural practices of the tribe. It is made out of split bamboo strips, fine weave, and cow dung smear, thereby inducing preserving and utility elements. The swelling is enough to give a good amount of space for storage internally. Above it is attached a woven handle for ease of carrying.
The lid of the basket is hinged, which locks it securely, while the red-colored paper flowers pasted onto the body give it an aesthetic touch, showing the artistry of the Kota. One distinguishing feature of this basket is that, rather than having a separate lid lying on top, it has a hinge to ensure that its basket lid attaches securely.
The bamboo basket is employed in the rituals for mortuary rites of women by the priest of the Kota tribe. It forms a key element in the religious services concerning the demise of women in the community. The elaborate workmanship practiced by the tribes and the cultural significance attached to it show the large connection of the Kota tribe with their ritual practices, which remain as a legacy for many generations
