short description
Garo People's Basket is a traditional bamboo and short cane basket that the Garo tribe, one of the indigenous people found in Meghalaya, India, produces by hand. The broad, hollow basket is woven so densely that it will hold up to the weight and thus accomplish its intended purpose. The exactitude of the weave displays the range of the Garo people's skills in working with indigenous materials. This strength is further provided by straight strips of split bamboo at the rim, which are further tightened by the wrapping cane and bamboo, hence giving the rim more life and allowing it to completely maintain its shape while bearing a tremendous expanse.

There are four wooden stands fixed onto the bottom of the Garo people's basket, held by small and thin strips of bamboo and cane. These low wooden supports give the basket an inch of leeway, getting it off the flat ground and improving stability. The design of these feet shields the bottom of the basket from direct contact with dirt or moisture in case the basket is set down anywhere—a move that would lengthen the durability of the basket; for the feet, therefore, can work as a protecting mechanism. Traditionally, this type of hemispheric basket, the Garo People's Basket, carries foodstuffs, nobody goods, and agriculture produce as testimony to the exceptional craftsmanship and peaceful assimilation into nature of the tribe. It signifies a specimen of sustainable use of the indigenously available resources by the Garo people.
