short description
The Bamboo Basket is a traditional carrying container of Angami Naga, one of the largest eagle communities found in Nagaland, particularly in Kohima district. This is a good example of indigenous craft and practical use of bamboo by the tribe. The basket is long and deep and is patterned out faithfully from split bamboo, which has been found abundantly and is valued for its elasticity and its strength. Sections of split bamboo are added to the rim of the basket to enhance strength and retain structure to the container when it is filled with heavy materials. The squarish base enables stable support for weight, while the circular open mouth allows easy filling and emptying.
