short description
The four-cornered bamboo basket of the Rabha community tells much about the understanding and sophistication of these people in their bamboo artworks and natural materials. This elaborate basket, by the indigenous Rabha of Assam, is finely split bamboo painstakingly woven into rhomboid illustration, which moreover is functional and aesthetic. The basket is unique because it is quadrangular at the top and bottom with finely aligned corners at each of the four corners to keep it as is. Unlike the usual flat-bottom basket, the present one has a slightly raised base which may probably be designed to allow air circulation and drainage in storing or transporting agricultural products or household items. And one more thing- the basket's rhomboid weave gives it strength and flexibility but lends it a decorative geometric appearance.

Such types of crafts are the result of traditional hand-weaving techniques brought down through the families of the Rabhas. The Rabhas are known for their particular affinity toward forest products with special reference to bamboo, which they can get abundantly in this region. Each such basket is a reflection of cultural practices, of daily life, and of ecological wisdom. Therefore, it is a form that symbolizes usefulness combined with sensibility toward art.Today, it has become a commonplace item among the local tribal groups, but very appreciably among the broader markets of handicraft and eco-products. The basket from Indian Museum, Kolkata, speaks of the eternal relevance and beauty of Rabha tribal craftsmanship.
