short description
The Avado is a typical U-shaped cane headdress worn by the warriors of the Sema Naga tribe of Nagaland. The headdress is a mark of valor as well as tribal pride, and is worn during war dances, ceremonies or even to show heroic worth in the community. A strong yet flexible cane forms the body of this headdress which is then tied with twisted bark threads to complete the look and add both structure and that raw slightly earthy quality which is so intrinsic. The most striking aspect of this headgear has been in the use of animal hair as decoration, generally dark, which projected for its wearer an image fiercely and commandingly reflecting warrior strength and their descent from nature. Traditionally, these headdresses were less ornamental and more an age-old symbol of tribal warriors and their status: some adorned with certain feathers, and others with different designs indicating separate clans or other achievements.
