Cane basket of Sema Naga Tribe
description
The Asaphu is a uniquely designed cane basket, traditionally used by the Sema Naga tribe. This community is a major Naga community residing mostly in Nagaland, in the northeastern region of India. Sema Naga is one among the group of Naga people who are known for their craftsmanship and rich heritage, and which is manifested in what can be termed the artistry of utility. The Asaphu thus embodies the intricate handiwork of Sema Naga.
This basket is conical with depth and height, furnished with a round cane handle for easy carrying. The rim of the basket is reinforced with cane piece tightly woven with cane strips. The basket is as strong and as long-lasting as possible. What is especially characteristic of the Asaphu are its decorative embellishments-small cane pieces lacquered and mounted on the outer surface of the basket. These black-colored items are not ornaments but serve as cultural aesthetics and identity.
The lower portion of the basket, including the base, has been woven in an entirely different style, which indicates the versatile skills of the artisan in basketry. It might be the upper portion following the standard conical weave, but its base is distinctly styled, which would not only give strength to the basket but also its aesthetic beauty. Such an Asaphu is beyond just a useful container; it also depicts well the culture of the Sema Naga tribe, where practicality and ornamentation are combined. It is meant for various domestic and ritual uses and echoes the traditional craftsmanship of the people.
