short description
An aspect of economy arises when prevailing human values and ideology become associated with particular institutions. They are famous for their metallurgical knowledge, and the Agarias believe they are "born of fire" with regards to their origins from the ancient legend. The story tells that they ruled over the iron city called Loharipur by twelve Agaria brothers, whose very existence was wiped out by the Vedic god Surya, forcing them to live the life of a nomad, eternally in search of their lost homeland. The Agarias still uphold some of their ironworking traditions despite modernization; however, their entire culture is waning with the passage of time. The film Myth Breaking (Mitha Bhang), edited by Dilip Panda, recounts their plight and cultural heritage, especially during the fair of Shivratri in Dagona, Mandla. This fair serves as a gathering for Agarias and other tribal communities to preserve their rituals, music, and folklore.
